Refugee Day

On the 20th March 2015 St Vincent’s had a Refugee Day. We started the day with a whole school assembly; we invited a lady called Paulette along to speak to us. She came as a refugee from West Africa and was an asylum seeker in the UK for 7 years and 4 months. She had to leave her family and her son behind when she left her country.

During the day we had workshops in class looking at facts about refugees, we thought about what we would take if we had to leave home quickly and we took part in a meditation. At the end of our session we had to think about what we liked during the day, or any feelings we had and write them on a large piece of sugar paper.

Turkey Day

We’ve had a fantastic day learning all about life in Turkey; the food, the clothes, the dancing and the crafts. The children learned how to play Korobe; they cooked  ekmek and baklava; they learned to dance the Halay; they made amulets called Hamsas and beautiful Turkish tiles. They did some great research too – see if you can remember the answers to these questions:

What is the capital city of Turkey?

What is the currency of Turkey?

What is the highest mountain in Turkey?

Erasmus Visit Day 4

It was the last day of the visit and off we went to the Black Country Museum to see what life in Britain was like in the 19th century when the first industrial towns and villages were emerging.

We wandered through the  village and chatted to residents charismatic residents. There were trams to ride, games to play, things being made, stories to hear. We visited the mines and rode on the fairground, ate lunch in the pub and explored the tiny back-to-back houses and shops.

It was time to say goodbye as the Polish and Turkish teams headed off to the airport. …and finally the Italian team set off back to the hotel for their last evening in Birmingham.

Erasmus Visit Day 3

On Friday we started the day with a ‘Talk for Writing’ presentation from each class. We heard everything from traditional stories, persuasive letters, reports and even a speech by William Shakespeare. Then we took our visitors on a tour of the school while our children presented them with hand-made flowers.

Meanwhile the teachers had a meeting to plan the next steps for the project. It took a lot of discussion to decide on the dates for our next visits, but we got there in the end.

In the afternoon, the children had a gymnastics lesson with a specialist coach, while the their teachers went shopping.

Later there was much secret practice for the evening performance – a night of song and dance with contributions from each country. It was a fabulous show – have a look at the films on the next page. Halfway through we stopped for some fish ‘n’ chips – traditional English meal.

What a tiring day! We started with a visit to the Birmingham Council House to see the Lord Mayor. He showed us around his rooms with beautiful furniture and paintings.

Later we got to sit in the seats of the councillors and even the chair of the Leader of the Council – sorry Sir Albert!

Next came shopping – the Christmas market was a great place to buy souvenirs and presents to take home. The Birmingham Big Wheel gave a view across the whole of the city centre.

Erasmus Visit Day 1

Our Turkish and Polish visitors arrived last night and Miss Coleman took them to their hotel for a good rest after their journey. This morning we collected them in the minibuses and came to school for tea and biscuits! The pupils met up with their host families and spent some time in class. The teachers talked……about schools!

In the afternoon at church,  Year 3 held a beautiful wedding service (pretend only!)  with some help from Father Solomon. Lots of photo opportunities.

After school the pupils went off to have tea and spend the evening with their hosts. The teachers went out to sample a a typical Birmingham curry! The Italian team arrived after a very long journey – 3 airplane changes. They needed to sleep so we will meet them properly tomorrow.

Brazil Day

This was a wonderful day with dance, float making and a themed lunch menu. In the afternoon all the floats set out on an amazing carnival procession  up to Heartlands Academy. With World Cup spirit the children cheered the teams of footballers made up of parents, children and staff. The children beat the staff 1-0 but the parents managed to hold them to a 0-0 draw. Good fun!

Bangledesh Day

Thank you to everyone who helped with this wonderful day.The children learned lots of facts about Bangladesh. They cooked, danced, played cricket, had mehndi patterns and even learned to count in Bengali.
